AI Search Readiness Scorer
Score any page against our four-axis generative-search readiness lens.
Answer a short questionnaire on answer clarity, entity strength, topical placement, and freshness. Get a matrix score and prioritised recommendations.
Scores of 20+ generally earn AI-search citations within 30–90 days. 14–19 needs targeted rework — usually a top-of-page rewrite and schema additions. Below 14, consider consolidation.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are new labels on an old discipline: making a page easy for a machine to trust, extract, and cite. AI Overviews, ChatGPT's browsing mode, and Perplexity don't rank pages the way classic organic search does — they select passages to synthesise into an answer, and the selection criteria draw heavily on signals search engines have used for years (topical authority, entity clarity, content freshness) layered with a new emphasis on answer extractability.
We built this scorer around four axes we see recur across every citation-analysis project we run: answer clarity, entity strength, topical placement, and freshness. It's not a black-box algorithm — it's a structured version of the same checklist our strategists work through manually before greenlighting a page for an AEO push. Score honestly; the questionnaire only works if you resist the urge to round up.
The four axes explained
Answer clarity measures whether the page states its core answer plainly, early, and in a structurally extractable format (a list, a table, or a tight paragraph) rather than making the reader — or the crawler — assemble the answer from scattered context. Entity strength measures whether the page and its author are clearly identified as trustworthy sources: schema markup, a named and linked author bio, and verifiable sameAs links to established profiles all feed this axis.
Topical placement measures whether the page sits inside a coherent content cluster with genuine internal linking, rather than existing as an isolated orphan page — AI systems, like classic search engines, weight pages more heavily when surrounding content reinforces the same topic. Freshness measures whether the page's visible update date and underlying facts are current; stale pages are increasingly deprioritised as retrieval systems favour recency for anything time-sensitive.
Reading your score band
A score of 20 or higher out of the 24-point matrix generally indicates a page with a realistic shot at citation within 30-90 days of a deliberate rework, assuming the underlying topic has genuine search demand. A score of 14-19 needs targeted rework — usually a rewritten opening section plus schema additions — before it's worth actively promoting for AI-search visibility. Below 14, the honest recommendation is often to consolidate the page into a stronger sibling or retire it rather than invest further optimisation into a structurally weak asset.
- 20-24: citation-ready — monitor and maintain, don't over-invest further.
- 14-19: needs rework — prioritise the lowest-scoring axis first, not a scattergun rewrite.
- Below 14: consolidate or retire — check whether a stronger page already covers the topic.
What this scorer deliberately doesn't measure
We don't claim this tool predicts actual AI Overview inclusion — no public methodology from Google, OpenAI, or Perplexity discloses their exact selection criteria, and any tool claiming to guarantee citation is overselling. What the scorer does reliably measure is the presence or absence of the structural prerequisites that our own client work has repeatedly shown correlate with citation likelihood. Treat the output as a prioritisation aid for your rework backlog, not as a certified prediction.
It's also a single-page tool by design. A page can score perfectly on all four axes and still fail to get cited if the domain lacks broader topical authority or if a stronger competing source already dominates the query. Pair page-level scoring with a domain-level content-cluster review before drawing conclusions about a whole topic area.
Step-by-step workflow
- 1Pick a target page and query
Choose a page you want to see cited in AI Overviews or chatbot answers for a specific query.
- 2Score it against all eight questions
Answer honestly on the 0-3 scale per question rather than defaulting to the middle value.
- 3Read the band, not just the raw number
A 19 and a 14 are both 'needs rework' but call for different levels of urgency.
- 4Fix the lowest-scoring axis first
Don't spread effort evenly — the weakest axis is usually the binding constraint on citation eligibility.
- 5Re-score after the rework
Confirm the score genuinely moved before promoting the page for AI-search visibility.
- 6Track actual citation over 60-90 days
Use Search Console and manual query checks — the scorer predicts readiness, not guaranteed outcomes.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a high score guarantee my page appears in AI Overviews?
- No. No tool can guarantee that, since AI Overview and chatbot citation selection is proprietary and query-dependent. A high score indicates the structural prerequisites are in place; it doesn't override competitive or demand-side factors.
- How is this different from a classic on-page SEO audit?
- Classic on-page audits weight keyword usage, meta tags, and internal linking for ranking purposes. This scorer weights the same underlying page more specifically for extractability and citation by generative answer systems, which prioritise clarity and entity trust somewhat differently than classic ranking factors do.
- Should every page on my site score 20+?
- No — reserve the effort for pages targeting genuinely answerable, citation-worthy queries. Transactional pages, for instance, rarely need the same answer-clarity structure as an informational explainer.
- How often should I re-score a page?
- Re-score after any significant content update, and periodically (every 3-6 months) for pages you're actively promoting for AI-search visibility, since freshness itself is one of the four axes.
- What's the single highest-leverage fix if I only have time for one?
- For most pages we audit, rewriting the opening 100 words to state the answer plainly and adding a linked, named author bio move the score the most per unit of effort.
- Can this scorer be gamed by stuffing keywords into the answer?
- The questionnaire rewards structural clarity, not keyword density, so stuffing won't inflate the score meaningfully — and keyword stuffing actively works against the readability and trust signals both axes are trying to capture.
